Google Chromebooks @ OBA

The Academy has been offering a student ownership program to its students for the last 5 years, giving the opportunity to purchase an iPad, case and insurance.

After a lengthy review process of the relative successes of this deployment, the Academy has decided that whilst it believes there is a benefit to students having access to technology to support their learning, an iPad is no longer the most appropriate device.

The continued development within the Academy of G Suite (formerly Google Apps for Education), has prompted the decision to adopt a change of direction with the student ownership program. The Academy would like to continue to deliver the opportunity to purchase technology but would like to change the device on offer to students from being an iPad to a Google Chromebook.

A Chromebook is a type of laptop that is designed for use with the G Suite. Applications and files are all stored in the cloud and are accessed using a Google login.

This year the following items are included with the order:

  • 11” Google Chromebook
  • 1 Year Manufacturer's Warranty
  • Google management license allowing enrolment with the Academy network
  • Neoprene protective sleeve

The package costs £200. This can be paid for via Wisepay, either in a single payment for the full amount or in instalments. Students who are eligible for free school meals will get a £25 discount on this price making it £175 in total.

  • What is the make and model of the Chromebook?

The Chromebook on offer is the Lenovo N23. This device has an 11.6” screen, 4GB RAM and 16GB built in storage (although users files are all stored in the cloud in Google drive). The device on offer may change based on availability from the manufacturer. It has been agreed with our Google partner that this device and price have been secured until the end of November 2017. Beyond this date the make and model of the Chromebook may change but it will maintain the same specification as the one which is currently available. The price will also not change.
  • What year groups are eligible to purchase a Chromebook?

This offer is available to all students in years 9 to 13.
  • I have already purchased an iPad through last years’ student ownership programme; can I buy a Chromebook too?

Yes, any students that have already purchased a device through previous schemes are able to purchase a Chromebook too.
  • Is the device insured to cover accidental damage?

The Academy is not offering any insurances or warranty extensions with the purchase of the Chromebook. If you wish to have your device insured to cover against accidental damage this is something you will need to purchase separately. The Academy will not be taking responsibility for the repair or replacement of any equipment supplied under this programme.
  • How will the ordering process work?

This year the Academy has chosen to bring the ordering and payment services in house. Unlike previous years where a finance package has been offered, this year we are asking parents to deposit money onto their Wisepay accounts to pay for the device. A device will only be ordered when it has been fully paid for. Payment can still be done in a single transaction for the full amount or in instalments. When the £200 balance (or £175 for students eligible for Free School Meals) has been received the device will be ordered from our Chromebook partner Getech.
  • When will my device arrive?

The Academy will be raising orders for paid for devices at the end of each month. From this point we would anticipate it will take approximately two weeks for the device to be delivered to the Academy. This is because the device will be setup and configured by the Academy’s Google partner Getech before it gets dispatched, making the process of issuing them to students much simpler.
  • How long do I have to place an order?

The Academy will process orders placed on Wisepay up until the February half term. The closing dates for completed payments are as follows:

October 2017 – Tuesday 31st October 2017 (device to be received mid November 2017)
November 2017 – Thursday 30th November 2017 (device to be received mid December 2017)
December 2017 – Friday 15th December 2017 (device to be received early January 2018)
February 2018 – Friday 16th February 2018 (device to be received early March 2018)

At this point the portal will close, allowing the Academy the time needed to prepare for the portal to reopen again later in the Summer term. The gap in ordering is required to allow the Academy to go back out to the IT suppliers and check that the best value for money is being achieved with the equipment being offered.

  • I already have a Chromebook, can I use it in school?

Yes you can but in order for the Academy to be able to connect the device to its network you will need to purchase a Google management license via Wisepay. This allows the Academy to enrol the device with its G Suite management system and connect it to the Academy network. The cost of the license is £17.50.
  • Why has the scheme been extended to include year 9 students?

In previous years we made this scheme available to students in years 10 and upwards. This was because the device was offered as a tool to support students with their GCSE studies. As students now start their GCSE courses earlier we have extended the offering to include year 9 students, with the same idea that having a device will support them with their GCSE courses.
  • What if I have any questions about the Chromebook or the ordering process?

The Academy will be holding a drop in session to give parents/carers/students the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the programme. The Chromebook partner will be available on the evening to answer any questions about the device as well as representatives from the Academy if you would like to discuss the ordering process. This is not a compulsory event but is an opportunity for you to get answers to any questions you might have. The drop in session will be from 4:30pm – 6:30pm on Thursday 19th October. You can also email the Academy your question or enquiry to chromebooks@bushfield.co.uk.
