Careers Programme

In December 2017 the Government published a Careers Strategy which sets out a long term plan to build a world class careers system that will help young people and adults choose a career that is right for them.

To achieve this aim, the strategy sets out that every school and academy providing secondary education should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision. Although the Gatsby Benchmarks are not a statutory framework, by adopting them, schools and academies can be confident they are fulfilling their legal duties.

At Ormiston Bushfield Academy we support and value the development of education in Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance for all our students and continue to stand by the ethos of providing the Opportunities to students, developing Belief in one’s self and abilities and encouraging high Aspirations for all individuals. All aspects of the Careers Education Programme helps to better prepare our students for the challenges they will face in the future, both in education and beyond.

Following the Gatsby Benchmarks ensures that all students within the academy have the opportunity for first-hand experiences of the workplace, learn from employees and employers of companies we partner with and develop a deeper understanding of linking curriculum learning with careers to make it relatable. This is done with an approach to embedding inclusion, diversity and equality in all aspects. Alongside this, our Student Entitlement states that students from year 8 – 11 are entitled:-

  • To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
  • To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options evenings, assemblies, group discussions and taster events.
  • To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses, including applications for University.
